Solana Beach, Cardiff, and Encinitas are the hub of coastal cycling in North County San Diego. The three coastal cities are also known for their various surf breaks, and the 101 is lined with cars carrying surfboards at dawn. When the swell is on, cyclists often must dodge surfers and their boards in the bicycle lanes. The most popular starting point is an Encinitas bike ride. The central location is a perfect spot to head North, South, or East. Cadence Cyclery Encinitas with its large parking lot and the coffee shop, Queenstage, and Moto Deli, the sandwich spot, draw cyclists from up and down the coast.

Riding the 101
All coastal rides, especially an Encinitas bike ride, involve riding on the 101. This coastal “highway” has dedicated bike lanes (there are a few sections where you can ride in the right-hand lane), and little elevation gain. As it traverses the coast you ride next to the Pacific or above on the bluffs. Stop anywhere for a picture on the sand or an overlook of a famous surf break. Encinitas has a few “secret” overlooks that are usually empty where you can sit and rest in take in the amazing views.
When the 101 isn’t directly on the ocean, you are typically passing small commercial zones packed with shopping and dining. I hesitate to even count the number of coffee shops in Encinitas. One local favorite has two locations, one right across the street from the other!
Encinitas Bike Ride a Starting Point
As a central location in North County San Diego, Encinitas is a perfect choice for you to start an Encinitas bike ride. There is ample parking along the coast and at the train station. Encinitas is one of my favorite starting points for heading east, because there are a few options to choose a bike friendly route.
